You are not free if you’re being told how to use your land. Yes, laws are needed that protect you from the unscrupulous or ignorant user so that our national and state lands remain sustainable and unpolluted and your own property remains healthy. Good stewardship on all levels is vital for community health. You are not free if someone is polluting public lands or your air and water. You are not free if their use of their property keeps you from using yours. Land and water use are complex issues, and they are best resolved locally by people who understand the issues and how communities’ practices impact each other.
Compromise is necessary. Laws should protect the freedom of communities from the unscrupulous that would use natural resources unsustainably or poison them. But your interests aren’t protected when your representative is in the pocket of Big Oil. Salem cannot know what your needs are and help protect you when your representative works for outside special interests. Your representative should work WITH YOU to protect YOUR interests as well as the interests of other community stakeholders from those that only care about Wall Street. I’ve stuck up for individual freedom all my life, and I’ll stick up for yours.
